American Express was founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1850 as a freight forwarding service. It was established as a joint-stock corporation by the merger of the cash-in-transit companies owned by Henry Wells (Wells & Company), William G. Fargo (Livingston, Fargo & Company), and John Warren Butterfield (Wells, Butterfield & Company, the successor earlier in 1850 of Butterfield, Wasson & Company). Wells and Fargo also founded Wells Fargo & Co. in 1852 when Butterfield and other directors opposed the idea of American Express expanding to California.

American Express was founded and headquartered in a building at the corner of Jay Street and Hudson Street in an area that would later be known as the Tribeca section of Manhattan. For years it had a virtual monopoly on express shipments (goods, securities, currency, etc.) moving through the entire state of New York. In 1874, American Express relocated its headquarters to 65 Broadway (today’s 65 Broadway) in Manhattan’s burgeoning Financial District, a site that would hold two buildings.
