2021 Seagate Technology Holdings plc. All Rights Reserved It was originally incorporated in 1978 as Shugart Technology and began business in 1979. [2] The company has been registered in Dublin, Ireland since 2010, with operational headquarters located at Fremont, California and the United States.
The first 5.25-inch hard disk drive (HDD), the 5-megabyte ST-506, was developed by Seagate in 1980. From 1983 onwards, especially after the IBM XT was introduced, they became one of the major suppliers in the microcomputer market during the 1980s.
Originally founded as Shugart Technology
Seagate Technology (originally known as Shugart Technology) was founded on November 1, 1978, and began operations in October 1979 with co-founders Al Shugart, Tom Mitchell, Doug Mahon, Finis Conner, and Syed Iftikar. When Conner approached Shugart with the concept of forming a new company to design 5.25-inch HDDs — which Conner believed would soon explode in disk drive economics — the companies founded began. Hasbro switched to the name Seagate Technology after Xerox’s Shugart Associates (also founded by Shugart) threatened them with a lawsuit when they wanted to call it ‘Seagate’.
Early history and the Tom Mitchell era
In 1980 the company delivered its first product, the ST-506 with a 5 MB (megabyte) storage capacity. Chosen just a year later, it became the first hard disk to meet the 5.25-inch format of the Shugart mini-floppy drive. It utilized a Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM) encoding6 and later a ten-megabyte version was released, the ST-412. This deal garnered Seagate the position of major OEM supplier for the IBM XT, IBM’s first personal computer to support a hard disk.
